The Palace of Versailles was built by King Louis XIV and renovated and added on to by his successors. The place is massive. It is truly unbelievable how big this place is. Unfortunately, because the place is so large, I really couldn't get a single picture to show the scope of it. It is big and opulent, very opulent. And in its day, it was supposedly even more audacious!
...and smoky. Though an engineering assessment of the day recommended raising the chimneys to create better draft, they would then have shown over the roof line. That was unacceptable to the King, so it was not done. How's that for aesthetics over practicality!
